Stopping by Woods on a Snowy evening

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy evening

Frost’s best  poetry  exhibits the structure of symbolic poetry, much more Clearly than does of many a modern poet . Critics say that Frost was  a poet of Pastures and pain , Mountain and rivers , woods and garden , fruits and flowers , seeds and birds .

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy evening

Here woods are symbolizes as contrast to civilization. Through this poem woods can be categorized as a symbol of death .The most significant symbol in the poem “stopping by woods on a snowy Evening” would be woods. The woods may symbolize temptations in life, from a view they seem mysterious beauty. And some are tempted to stay and enjoy the view, but the traveler chooses to continue his journey through life to reach his destination, which should be our goals in life too.

And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Here this line suggests that Death is the ultimate reality of the life but before that one has some duty to fulfill and the words like “miles to go” indicates that there are so many  works and responsibility and one has to compete.

So here “sleep” symbolizes the death.

Death   is  not  the  greatest loss in life .The greatest loss  of  it  what dies inside us while we live.

Nature:
In this poem, nature is the symbol and  the snow is a symbol of coolness, while frozen lake  is a symbol of the death and chillness of life.

Horse:
In this poem Robert Frost takes Horse as a symbol,  which symbolizes as a soul of the poet.

Village:

Village is symbolized here as society and civilization.

My Point of View Regarding Novel ‘To The Lighthouse’ by VirginiaWoolf.

My Point of View Regarding Novel ‘To The Lighthouse’ by VirginiaWoolf.

For the touch of this creation, I remember one quote ..

“Light never Died , Sound never Travels”

we can see the light , we are not seeing live , it is little late –whatever we seeing is late , it is travelling from eyes to light .

I want say something about ‘Stream of Consciousness’ technique means we can say that its complex narrative technique. In this Stream of consciousness technique the story develops through the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters. This technique is used by modernist writers. here in this novel

Virginia Woolf used Stream of Consciousness Technique that deals with different subjects like –Complexities of human relationship, struggle of female artist, everyday battles with near and dears etc. With the use of Semicolons, Parentheses she beautifully narrates the novel. And which is also different from traditional narrative structure. Use of direct and indirect monologue and free association draws reader towards character’s inner world and their thinking process. The flow of thoughts is represented by means of long-winding, interconnected sentences.

“Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; life is luminous halo (things remain tomorrow) semi-transparent envelop surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end.”

"The Swamp Dweller" by Wole Soyinka

"The Swamp Dweller" by  Wole Soyinka

The Swamp Dwellers is a play by Soyinka in which he has portrayed the real picture of two sides that is tradition V/S Modernity. The play is about Yoruba culture in which Makuri and Alu they are living and waiting for their son whose name is Awuchike. Soyinka has presented Yoruba culture which is full of swamp because of food in the village. And they are suffering because of plenty of water and Beggar who comes from Bhukanji and over there they were suffering because of scarcity of water.

The play is about struggle between human being and the unfavorable force of the Nature. Use of River, Serpent, Swamp and use of city life these are polar oppositions in the play. From the beginning of the play they are talking about death of his son but clearly mention that really he is dead or not. Swamp is chaotic and they are living in the chaos.

Tradition:- Tradition is a belief or behavior passed down within group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past. Makuri, Alu and Igwezu are representation of tradition.

Modernity:-Modernity typically refers to a past traditional post medieval, historical period one marked by the money from feudalism toward capitalism, industrialism. Secularization, rationalization, the nation state and its constituent institutions and forms of surveillance. Awuchike and Desala are representation of modernity.

Play starts with the description of village which shows traditional side of the play.

Viewes on Play Waiting For Godot

Viewes on Play Waiting For Godot

Samuel Beckett was an Irish playwright, poet and novelist best known for his play ‘Waiting for Godot’. Strongly influenced by fellow Irish writer, James Joyce, Beckett is sometimes considered the last of the Modernists. Though the play commonly interpreted within the context of the theatre of absurd, existentialist literature, it is also Christian allegory and also interpreted with religious interpretations.

Here we can discuss that nothingness in Waiting for Godot it shows some deep meaning in life in different way. ‘Waiting for Godot’ gives a message that while doing nothing there is something. “Nothing is also better than something” A person who always has desire for any achievement till birth to death his list of desire will never come to end. In the same way for Godot there is ‘waiting’ which has no any end or meaning.

The setting of the play is influenced by a mode of nothingness. A desolate country road, a ditch, and a leafless tree make up the barren, otherworldly landscape, which bears a surplus of symbolism. The landscape is a symbol of a barren and fruitless civilization or life. There is nothing to be done and there appears to be no place better to depart. The tree, usually a symbol of life with its blossoms and fruit or its suggestion of spring, is apparently dead and lifeless. But it is also the place to which they believe this Godot has asked them to come. The setting of the play reminds us the postwar condition of the world which brought about uncertainties, despair, and new challenges to the all of mankind.

Tree is the Symbol that used in literature . it gave very symbolic meaning, in the second act leaves are sprouting means leaves as a “hope” for Vladimir and Estragon for them hope for Godot will come.  It represents cycle of nature and it shows hope also. these leaves inspired both tramps.

Actually in this play many action that repeated , while it comes second time , it presents different meaning . In both Acts, evening falls into night and moon rises. ‘Coming of night and moon’, it’s the very common, simple thing which is naturalized process. Means ones night is there means, day will come. And a new day means new Start, new hope. Both acts end when night fall and moon rise; the situation is same in both act but it also have symbolic meaning that night represent death; another meaning is that like moon their waiting never end.

This play leads towards thinking  on so many things . This play though it has not action, is multi-layered play. Here ‘nothing’ itself is ‘something’. here debris signified that  life is divided into various fragments and it has different meanings. search for little things . it is describes the absurdity of life , which presented very well in this play .

Act- 1
Evening time
Estrogon sitting on a low mound, is trying to take off his boot, he pulls as it with both hands , paintings. he gave up, exhausted rest tries again , as before
Enter Vladimir
Estrogon: Nothing to be done .

Beckett presents what human not do or what not thinking. it is all about search for self . Godot is Death , sound like Death . without Death we can’t achieve God. nothingness in Waiting for Godot it shows some deep meaning in life in different way. ‘Waiting for Godot’ gives a message that while doing nothing there is something. “Nothing is also better than something”.

A person who always has desire for any achievement till birth to death his list of desire will never come to end. In the same way for Godot there is ‘waiting’ which has no any end or meaning. The theme of Nothingness is also present here, all characters, struggles with their existence. They do many absurd things; they are waiting for something also, but at last thing remains as it is. Nothing happens as such. Doing nothing there is something .

Here we interact that one who is busy with his boots and other one is busy on thinking. it show their identity what they are .  The hats and boots are playing vital role in this play. Here it is presented symbolically. The symbol of boot presented with the character of Estrogen that shows the lower order thinking as he has also had less memory. His thinking does not represent any logical dialogues throughout the play. Boots here may relate with the body and it shows the material thing.
Hat also play vital role in the play. It is related with the character of Vladimir, the hat also shows the higher order thinking and logical connection. In the play we may observe that there also the mind power of the answer of Vladimir. It shows the spirituality of the life.

It is all about Master slave relationship . Yes Lucky’s obedience is extremely irritating; we can’t understand that how he is so obedient, what is the meaning behind that for Lucky we can say that his behavior is unbearable, Lucky and Pozzo’s characters shows us relationship between master and slave but it is extreme level of slavery what Lucky represent.

My opinion goes with Death . I’m believe that our ultimate goal is life .we do all the things for what purpose , for whom , and why . at the end nothing can comes with us . Death is Godot that everyone achieved at end of life , it is goal . above all words describes the same meaning leading towards to the Death.

.Here  the subject of this play is not Godot but waiting because the activity of both characters shows nothingness. Waiting that signified Hope .  No any rising action in the play, no any climax in the play. Only the story goes on moving with the illogical activities of them. They only are killing the time. according to me waiting is the central things .

In the play  many times while viewing the movie I feel the effect of existential crisis or meaninglessness of human existence in the irrational and indifference Universe. When, Vladimir and Estragon were talking to each other and when Estragon asks to leave, Vladimir reminds him that they are actually waiting for Godot. And doing meaningless things. their discussion is endless, and it goes with waiting . it is also appeals for meaning of the life . ‘ search for self ’

Man is simply is not that he simply what he conceive himself to be , but he is what he wills , and he is conceives himself after already existing . as he wills to be after that leap towards existence . man is nothing else but what he makes of himself .  That is the first Principle of existentialism .
They look at the tree and contemplate hanging themselves . Estragon  takes off his belt but it breaks when they pull on it . vladimir  says that they will hang themselves tomorrow unless Godot comes to solve them . They decide to go but again do not go .

Master slave relationship of Pozzo and Lucky it leads to the political reading of the play . one thing that is nothingness- the nothingness of the human life. But here ‘nothingness’ points its finger toward ‘everything’ , everything that modern people face physically and psychologically after two World Wars.

Whereas in the tradition play we see a concentrated single action motivates the whole play, here in the case of Waiting for Godot everything is fuelled by the sense of ‘nothingness’. In fact, here nothing creates everything.

At last conclude with it that - A new day will come with new desire that something fruitful will come for somebody in life. One or two ways it may be God, a fruitful desire will come for somebody who is eagerly waiting that has no any end.

'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare

                 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare

Hamlet ‘ is the one of the classic work of literature as well as Shakespeare ‘s world famous Tragedy. ‘Hamlet ‘ is the  Tragedy of the Philosopher and thinking Man.

Doven Wilson say in his book… ‘ What happen in Hamlet ’

“Tragedy is an Unsuccessful struggle of a great soul ”

we  feel  ‘aesthetic  delight ‘ during  during  watching  the movie. In there  is  scene  of Prince  of  Hamlet , he react as a real mad one. And yes  he  also behaved  with Polonius  when he asked about  her daughter ‘s relationship with him.  There is also one more scene that I observed  appearance of Drama performer at  that time  Prince  Hamlet  play and  rather  enjoyed  with  her.

As we know  that  it is the tragedy and of course direct attachment with the character.  we feel catharsis  during  watching  the movie  there are  some  scene in  this  movie  like - when  father Hamlet  was killed  by Claudius . In the nunnery  scene  when  Prince Hamlet  behaved  rudely with ophellia  and she got pain and suffer by Hamlets. and  also watching  ophellia’s  too much madness  she becoming  tool for  her  father , and her death  is  touchable for us. we have  sympathy  for Prince Hamlet , as we know that he was fight for revenge and while scene of grave digging  when Prince Hamlet Know the ophellia was died and at that   time he spoke that more than 40,000  brothers I loved  ophellia .   in this tragedy all are  died  at  the  end  except horatio .

Its show  the  there  is beginning  of any things  on the earth there should must  be end of it .  beginning of  this movie  there  is a reign  of Hamlet  through the  image of Father Hamlet ‘statue  and  end  the  play  all  who related  to the Hamlet family  they  died ,and end  of their life and Hamlet ruler. So at the end the statue down to the land into the  dust.  We may say that it is   cycling  process .

During  studying  the play  and watching the movie  I would  found  Moral and  Philosophical approach  in the movie. as we know  that it’s the  tragedy of  Thinker and philosophical man Hamlet . in this movie and play Prince Hamlet’s  character present  as a moral and thinker  and student of philosophy.  Moralistic idea  found in the Hamlet’s  character and  because his too much morality  and philosophy  there is delay in  taking  revenge.

“Mourning Becomes Electra”

                “Mourning Becomes Electra”

Mourning Becomes Electra is a modern play, shows moderns of Mannon family. Mannon family is very rich and fashionable also. Mannon ladies have no privacy in their life , they can go away where they want.

“Mourning Becomes Electra”  Mourning means :The expression of sorrow for someone’s death,Grief , lament , lamentationBlack clothes worn as an expression of sorrow when someone dies.“Electra” means :Sparkling , the fairy sun“Becomes “ in the sense of “befits” Electra to mourn- it is her fate Mourning (Black) (sorrow) is becoming to her, it is the only color that becomes her destiny.

Mourning Becomes Electra  based on the use of the GreekMyths as a narrative base, their New England scene, the intense psychological focus of the subject matter and also with their historical perspectives. It is considered O’Neill’s most famous work.

As a ambitious play it is based on Greek tragic Myth Oresteia to 19th cen. New England. As a play cycle it ran for 150 performances before closing in March 1932. The story of this play is a kind of retelling of the Oresteia by Aeschylus is a trilogy. Here in Mourning Becomes Electra all characters ,most of parallel characters from the ancient Greek play.

Mourning Becomes Electra comes as a Modern Tragedy, the play features murder, adultery, incestuous love and revenge , weak relationship of family members. We can see different minds of people , their secrets, hubris, fate and honor.

The characters of this play reflected as a unsuccessful strugglers of an individual to escape a tragic fate and the dark nature of human existence. It is considered with Freud’s circle of Human mind/nature-psychological theory as well. Specially there are complexes of the characters of Oedipus and Electra.Mourning Becomes Electra is divided into three plays with different themes.

A Tempest by Aime Cesaire

Mourning Becomes Electra comes as a Modern Tragedy, the play features murder, adultery, incestuous love and revenge , weak relationship of family members. We can see different minds of people , their secrets, hubris, fate and honor.

Doctor Faustus, indeed, is a tragic hero. His Black deeds lead him to disaster. Despite repentance, he is punished. His all escaping ways fail to save him from declination. We can say that Marlowe, by this play, wants to say that if we go against God, we will have to pay a great cost or we will be punished.

Aime Cesaire Cesaire transforms the characters and transposes the scenes to reveal Shakespeare’s Prospero as the exploitative European power and Caliban and Ariel as the exploited natives. Cesaire’s A Tempest is an effective response to Shakespeare’s The Tempest because he interprets it from the perspective of the colonized and raises a conflict with Shakespeare as an icon of the literary canon.

Besides that in In The Tempest by William Shakespeare one might argue that colonialism is a reoccurring theme throughout the play because of the slave-master relationship between Ariel and Caliban and Prospero.

A Tempest is a postcolonial revision of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and draws heavily on the original play—the cast of characters is, for the most part, the same, and the foundation of the plot follows the same basic premise. Prospero has been exiled and lives on a secluded island, and he drums up a violent storm to drive his daughter’s ship ashore. The island, however, is somewhere in the Caribbean, Ariel is a mulatto slave rather than a sprite, and Caliban is a black slave.

A Tempest focuses on the plight of Ariel and Caliban the never-ending quest to gain freedom from Prospero and his rule over the island. Ariel, dutiful to Prospero, follows all orders given to him and sincerely believes that Prospero will honor his promise of emancipation. Caliban, on the other hand, slights Prospero at every opportunity: upon entering the first act, Caliban greets Prospero by saying “Uhuru!”, the Swahili word for “freedom.” Prospero complains that Caliban often speaks in his native language which Prospero has forbidden. This prompts Caliban to attempt to claim birthrights to the island, angering Prospero who threatens to whip Caliban.

Doctor Faustus by Marlowe

Doctor Faustus by Marlowe

Doctor Faustus, indeed, is a tragic hero. His Black deeds lead him to disaster. Despite repentance, he is punished. His all escaping ways fail to save him from declination. We can say that Marlowe, by this play, wants to say that if we go against God, we will have to pay a great cost or we will be punished.

In case of Doctor Faustus, we can say that how a scholar was tempted. His excessive desires for knowledge invites calamity for him. Doctor Faustus is after all a human being and like a human being, he repents on his sin which destroys his whole life. His knowledge has made him blind. He signs the pact, at that time, it was way to achieve his goal or only the pact, but later on he realizes that what he did. His all powers become curse for him.

Whenever he tries to repent, he was prevented from repenting by Lucifer and Mephastophilis. After signing the pact, he is dilemma that he has to fulfil his desires or to repent and seek mercy of god for his guilt.

In scene – 13, he has awaked with the reality that what will happen with him in coming future? We feel pity and fear for Doctor Faustus. We sympathize on seeing his worst condition. Doctor Faustus cries out and repents on his crime. He feels that he is passing his last night on the earth alone. He is full of frightened and regretful. He blames on his parents. He remorse that why was I born ever with soul? He said that his tragic end is pre-destined because his ego doesn’t want to leave him.

Marlowe has showed Doctor Faustus as the man of the Renaissance time against the Medieval time. Marlowe has also showed that in the Renaissance time, “Human being” is at the center but in the Medieval time “God” is at the center and this trend is altered in the Renaissance time. Doctor Faustus is presented as an example that shows the Renaissance concept. But here, we knew the desires of Doctor Faustus which are so grand. He can do anything for satisfying his desires. But Doctor Faustus chose evil path for getting his goal and it propelled him towards his doom.

“The Black Cat”

“The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe

The Black Cat follows the narrator’s descent into madness after he proclaims his sanity in the opening paragraph. The narrator confesses han alcoholism that interferes with his grasp on reality and produces mood changes.

The alcohol in the tale is like the cat, an external agent that intrudes in the dynamics of the plot. The introduction of alcohol is very significant as Poe was reputedly uncontrollable drunk during his lifetime.

The concept of  the ‘fantastic’ is introduced in his literature of horror. The fantastic explores the real and the supernatural and it contains both rational and irrational elements. A fantastic element is the apparition of a second black cat. The resolution of the story can be both rational and irrational.

In Poe’s stories, homicide requires animalistic elements. Animals signal the absence of human reason and morality. The murder of Pluto signals the narrator’s loss of reason and plunge into perverseness. Irrational Humans vs. Rational Animals, indicates Poe sees murder as animalistic and inhuman.

The Eagle by Tennyson

         The Eagle  by Tennyson

Tennyson was born on 6th  August 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire. The fourth of twelve children. He was the son of clergyman. Rev. George Clayton Tennyson. He is the second most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford dictionary of Quotations after Shakespeare.

"'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all”
"There is not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die”
"My strength is as the strength of ten, / Because my heart is pure”
      "Knowledge comes, but Wisdom lingers”
"The old order changes, yielding place to new".

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Symbols

Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Close to the sun - This could illustrate the status of a person.
In lonely lands – This could point out how lonely someone can be in this position.

This poem has references to the ancient Greek myth of Icarus. Study that story, and explain how you think knowing it helps a reader interpret what Tennyson is saying here.

Daffodils by William Wordsworth'

Daffodils by  William Wordsworth'

William Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud " also known as “ The daffodils” is a lyric poem focusing on the poet's response to the beauty of nature.
A lyric poem presents the deep feelings and emotions of the poet     rather than telling a story or presenting a witty observation.

The final version of the poem was first published in Collected Poems in 1815. An earlier version was published in Poems in Two Volumes in 1807 as a three-stanza poem. The final version has four stanzas. Wordsworth wrote the earlier version in 1804, two years after seeing the lakeside daffodils that inspired the poem .

Setting and Background Information

The poem recaptures a moment on April 15, 1802. whenWordsworth and his sister, Dorothy, were walking near Lake Ullswater in Grasmere, Cambria County, England, and came across a "long belt" of golden daffodils.

Wordsworth sister Dorothy, played an important part in his life and she also influenced him with her love of nature.

I wandered lonely as a Cloud (Daffodils): Rhyme, Form & Meter "I wandered lonely as a Cloud" has a fairly simple form that fits its simple and folksy theme and language. It consists of four stanzas with six lines each, for a total of 24 lines.

The rhyme scheme is also simple: ABABCC. (Rhymed Stanzas in Iambic Tetrameter ) . The last two lines of each stanza rhyme like the end of a Shakespearean sonnet, so each stanza feels independent and self-sufficient. This is called a "rhyming couplet."

I wandered lonely as a Cloud (Daffodils) Summary

In this poem the poet describes his experience of the sight of "a host of daffodils" during a lonely walk, the daffodils delight him with her beauty and "their sprightly dance". He says "they seem as numerous as the stars that shine in the sky"; He also remarks on the beauty of the lake nearby, but adds that even its sparkling waves are not so exuberant as the yellow daffodils "dancing in the breeze". Moreover, when he is sad, he thinks of daffodils "and then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils", that is to say, when his feelings are depressed, thinking of daffodils cheers him up.

Main Theme of the poem

Nature' s beauty uplifts the human spirit .

Theme of  { Happiness } :” Fluttering and dancing in the breeze  “ the poem just makes you feel good about life by using the power of imagination .
